The initial idea for establishing the Chalcographic Workshop was born in the early 1990s. It was originally intended to operate as a print workshop, encompassing all the equipment and machinery necessary for preparing and printing the prints from the existing original matrices of the Croatian authors of 20th century, but also of the awarded contemporary Croatian authors.
The collection numbering 500 print plates from the Department holdings represents the nucleus of the Chalcographic Workshop. The establishing was announced in 1994 by issuing the print maps of Menci Clement Crnčić and Branko Šenoa, on the occasion of celebrating 900th anniversary of the City of Zagreb. The prints for these maps were reprinted from the original plates of the two authors at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, in bibliophilic editions.

The Chalcographic Workshop was established in 1997, after having purchased the press for engraving as well as prepared and equipped the etching room on the ground floor at 12 Strossmayer Square. The Department Chalcographic Workshop was officially opened on the occasion of 1st Croatian Prints Triennial; this was a sign of introducing a new concept and a new orientation in the Departmentcs operation and activities.
